Coral Gardens : 1m x 1m , Acrylic on canvas. 2020 : created during the first UK lockdown.
This painting’s journey took me on a rollercoaster of highs and lows. The first brushstrokes went well, starting a conversation. I got in close to work into it and it grew evolving in all directions, but soon there became dead ends, frustrations and mistakes. In trusting my intuition, I make new attempts, painting over, swiping away and I re-apply more paint and create a textured story. While expressing myself I’m searching for truth, hope and happiness. I find a fine balance between love and hate and also of beauty and unsightlyness. The artistic journey becomes a voyage of discovery fuelled by inspiration. Finally, just as I feel it can't get any worse and I'm close to giving up, I find a turning point, a ‘magic’ moment, when everything feels just right and everything connects.
My artwork is spontaneous, intuitive and raw, exploring my memories and experiences of nature: of the sea, the sky and the landscape. Rather than following the traditional sense of recording by recognition, my use of colour and texture instead documents my senses. The energy of my mark-making expresses my emotions and remembrance of a time and place, creating a visual dreamscape to convey the true essence.
